Daniel Unlocked #47. The Rise of the Little Horn in Daniel 8.
Carefully read Daniel 8:8–12 and consider the direction in which the little horn is moving, as it holds significance for understanding the passage. The biblical text describes four horns spreading to the four winds of heaven, with a little horn arising from one of them. The question arises whether this horn comes from one of the four horns representing Alexander’s generals or from one of the four winds. The grammatical structure in the original language suggests that the horn originates from one of the four winds of heaven. Since this power emerges after the Grecian Empire and its four divisions, it is commonly understood as representing Rome in both its pagan and papal phases.
According to the biblical text, the little horn initially undertakes a horizontal movement, growing exceedingly great toward the south, east, and the Glorious Land (Palestine) (Dan. 8:9). These directions correspond to the three major areas that fell under the domination of pagan Rome.
As the little horn becomes the central figure in the vision, its vertical expansion is detailed. This expansion closely aligns with the little horn in Daniel 7, as evidenced by several similarities: both horns start small, become great, act as persecuting powers, are self-exalting and blasphemous, target God’s people, have aspects delineated by prophetic time, extend until the time of the end, and face supernatural destruction.
Given that the little horn in Daniel 7 represents the papacy, the vertical expansion of the little horn in Daniel 8 is interpreted to represent the same power.
Consequently, as in Daniel 2 and 7, the final main power is identified as Rome, but encompassing both its pagan and papal phases.
Read Daniel 8:10–12. In this passage, the little horn seeks to replicate the spiritual ambitions of the builders of Babel (Gen. 11:4). The terms “host” and “stars” in the Old Testament can refer to God’s people. Israel is called the host or armies of the Lord (Exod. 12:41), and God’s faithful people are depicted as shining like stars (Dan. 12:3). This figurative language signifies persecution against God’s people, whose true allegiance is in heaven (Phil. 3:20). While many Christians were previously persecuted by pagan emperors, the focus now shifts to the vertical activities of the little horn, indicating a connection with papal Rome and its historical persecution.
Daniel 8:11 mentions a “Prince,” identified elsewhere as “Messiah the Prince” (Dan. 9:25), “Michael your prince” (Dan. 10:21), and “Michael” the “great prince” (Dan. 12:1). This refers to Jesus Christ, who is the Prince of the host and our High Priest in heaven. The papacy attempts to overshadow and replace Jesus’ priestly role
In Daniel 8:11, the “daily sacrifice” recalls the earthly sanctuary’s ritual services, symbolizing Christ’s intercessory ministry in the heavenly sanctuary. The prophecy predicts that the papacy would substitute the intercession of Christ with that of earthly priests, undermining Christ’s role. Through counterfeit worship, the little horn diminishes Christ’s intercessory ministry and symbolically desecrates the place of Christ’s sanctuary. The papal system introduced distortions to the plan of salvation and usurped Christ’s intercessory work by means of the sacrament of the mass, the penance, and absolution of sins by human priests.
Daniel 8:12 states, “And he cast truth down to the ground. He did all this and prospered”. Jesus identifies Himself as the truth (John 14:6), and the Word of God is acknowledged as truth (John 17:17). In contrast, the papacy opposed translating the Bible into the language of the people, placed Bible interpretation under church authority, and elevated tradition above the Bible in practice. This raises the question of the significance of knowing biblical truth compared to adhering to human traditions.

i,m so glad the Bible is written in a language God,s people can understand i,ll be glad when we get to heaven and won’t need the Bible because we,ll have Jesus Christ and his word spoken directly to us God bless you 🙏🙏
